KARACHI: A recklessly driven bus ran over and killed two people and wounded nine others, including five women, in the SITE area on Monday morning, police said.

DIG-South Syed Asad Raza told Dawn that a fast-moving contract bus hit a rickshaw, several motorcycles and pedestrians at Bawani Chali. As a result, two persons were killed while nine others including five women were injured.

The dead and injured were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

The DIG said that the condition of all the wounded persons was said to be critical.

The bus driver managed to escape from the scene, leaving behind his vehicle that was impounded by the police.

Later, the police managed to arrest the driver, identified as Junaid Ahmed, in a raid in Orangi Town.

The DIG said that Junaid possessed a licence to drive light vehicle but he was driving a heavy vehicle.

He said that it was the contract bus of a textile mill and efforts were underway to arrest the bus owner as well.

The police said that the deceased were identified as Talib Qudoos and Shaharyar, 40.

The wounded persons were identified as Muhammad Muzammil, Wajahat Naeem, 24, Rehan Ramzan, 25, Junaid Khan, 25, Samina, 45, Maria, 30, Nafeesa Asghar and Arooba Shamshad, 23.

Later, a case was registered against the bus driver on the complaint of injured Muzammil whose brother Talib was killed in the accident.
