BAJAUR: The police claimed to have foiled a sabotage attempt by recovering anti-personnel landmines (APLs) here the other day.

The APLs were placed by unknown miscreants in Bara Laghari area of Mamond tehsil to carry out sabotage activities. They were safely recovered during an action conducted by Bomb Disposal Squad personnel, according to a statement.

The statement said upon receiving information about the presence of APLs along a walkway in Bara Laghari area, district police officer Waqas Rafique directed the BDS team to quickly reach the locality to find out the mines.

According to the statement, the BDS team led by DSP (security) Hoonar Khan cordoned off the area and launched a search for the explosive devices.

The statement didn’t mention the actual number of landmines recovered, but added that they were Russian-made, and were safely recovered and defused.

Rehabilitation of road

Volunteers of a welfare organisation began rehabilitating a major road here on Thursday.

“Our volunteers have commenced work on repairs to the 18km Inayat Kallay-Laghari Road, which was badly damaged in the 2008 floods,” said the Gulshan Foundation Bajaur, a youth organisation for Mamond tehsil, in a statement.

It said that it took the initiative after authorities failed to rehabilitate the road even four years after the approval of funds for it.

The organisation said that volunteers were repairing the road on a self-help basis and had pooled money for the work.
