ISLAMABAD: Amid current spell of torrential rains across the country, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), provincial authorities and other relevant agencies to remain on high alert to address the potential severe flooding in areas near the river Chenab and urban flooding caused by heavy rains in Punjab.

According to a statement issued by the PM office media, the prime minister says he is personally monitoring the anticipated heavy monsoon spell that will last till Aug 25.

He directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and all provincial disaster management authorities, rescue and relief agencies, civil defence, and district administrations to be prepared to protect residents in the Chenab catchment area and cities at risk of flooding due to heavy rains.

Mr Sharif also ordered preparations for the evacuation and rescue operations, as well as rainwater drainage to safeguard the public, besides ensuring ample stocks of potable water, medicines, tents, and other relief items for the affected people.

He directed the relevant agencies to keep the public informed about the anticipated flooding in vulnerable areas and to take precautionary measures to prevent expected floods in the areas around canals, nullahs, and rivers.

He also instructed that the people be made aware of the NDMA’s disaster alert application to monitor the situation at all times.
