SWABI: Awami National Party asked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Tuesday to shelve its plan to sell universities’ land in Mardan district, or the party would get behind the people opposing the ‘unjust’ move.

Talking to mediapesons here, Salim Khan Advocate, ANP former provincial general secretary, said instead of plans to sell the property of universities, the government should set up more educational institutions in Mardan.

He said it was happening for the first time in the country’s history that the land of universities was being sold to overcome their financial difficulties.

Mr Salim lamented that the provincial government planned to sell the lands of Abdul Wali Khan University, Bacha Khan Medical College, Agriculture University and University of Engineering Technology.

Mohammad Ishfaq, a former candidate of the provincial assembly, said the credit of establishing these universities went to ANP. He added that the party’s leadership and workers would protect institutions of higher learning.

Ghulam Haqqani, ANP’s district president, said that the KP cabinet had approved selling the universities’ land to help meet their financial needs.

OPEN COURT: On the directives of deputy commissioner Nasrullah Khan, Swabi teshil assistant commissioner Dr Izza Arshad held an open kutchery for women in the government girls high school, Gulshanabad, Maneri Payyan, on Tuesday.

On this occasion, women highlighted their problems.

Dr Izza assured them that their issues would be resolved on priority.
