MURREE: President Fazal Elahi Chaudhry was today [July 16] registered as [a] voter under the Electoral Rolls Act. The registration of the name of the President marks the commencement of the work of preparation of fresh electoral rolls in Rawalpindi district. The President signed the registration form at the President House, Murree, where he is staying.

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from London,] Archbishop Makarios has left Cyprus, the British Foreign Office announced… . The 60-year-old Archbishop — declared overthrown as President yesterday [July 15] by the Greek-led Cypriot National Guard — left the island after being granted temporary refuge in the British sovereign base areas. ... Observers believe the Cyprus President left the island in a British military aircraft.

[Reports from Nicosia add,] shortly before Archbishop Makarios left Cyprus … Navy gunboats began shelling his strong-hold of Paphos and tank and artillery were reported closing in overland. Makarios’s broadcast indicated that the National Guard had been joined by the 690-strong Greek Army contingent stationed here since independence in 1960. Some of them have been manning National Guard tanks.
