LBDC breach floods crops

SAHIWAL, March 23: About a 25-feet wide breach occurred on the left bank of Lower Bari Doab Canal (LBDC) here on Thursday morning at RD-440 near Chak 9/11-L, inundating crops on scores of acres. However, villagers plugged the breach on self-help basis by throwing trees and around 1,500 bags filled with sand and earth.

Later, armymen reached there and helped villagers in strengthening the bank.

People suspected that the breach occurred due to rat-holes, however, the Harappa police have started investigations to ascertain its cause.

The LBDC circle superintending-engineer has also started a probe in this regard.

KILLED: A speeding car ran over and killed a woman near Chak 84/5-on Thursday morning.

Muhammad Ali and his sister Zubaida were on their way by a bicycle when the car (LWD-6518) ran over them. Zubaida died on the spot while Muhammad Ali was shifted to hospital in a critical condition.

Yousafwala police have registered a case under Sections 320 and 337 of the PPC and arrested car driver Muhammad Arshad.

ROBBERIES: Dacoits looted a police ASI, three forest guards and a farmer here on Wednesday night in separate incidents.

Reports said seven dacoits intercepted ASI Khalid Husain and made off with Rs5,870 and a motorcycle near Chak 74/4-R. In West block of Kassowal forest, three gangsters robbed forest guards Ghulam Sajid, Tariq and Abdul Latif of their cash totalling Rs7,000 and cell phones. In another incident, four robbers took away Rs2,150 from farmer Fateh Muhammad.

Police have registered cases under Sections 395, 412 and 379 of the PPC with no arrest or recovery.
