DADU: Speakers paid homage to legendary scholar Shamsul Ulama Mirza Qaleech Baig for his extraordinary contribution to Sindhi language and literature at a programme held to mark the 95th death anniversary of the multilingual scholar.

They said that he was a versatile writer as his works comprised all branches of poetry as well as prose and a variety of subjects as diverse as theology, horticulture, agriculture etc.

The programme was organised by the Shamsul Ulama Mirza Qaleech Baig Research Chair at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro.

They said that Shamsul Ulama meant the sun of scholars and it was an honorific title that was bestowed on him by the British government for his great services in the field of education.

Director of the Chair Dr Nawab Kaka said that Mirza Sahib’s work merited more research and SU’s Qaleech Research Chair was undertaking, highlighting and promoting diverse aspects of his colossal literary output.

He said that Baig was a benefactor of Sindhi language and literature, who had done important and fundamental work on history, elegies, legendary literature, linguistics and other subjects in Sindhi.

Taj Joyo said that Mirza Qaleech was a great academic and literary personality of Sindh.

The legendary writer took special care of G.M. Syed during his childhood, he added.

Writer and broadcaster Naseer Mirza said that Mirza Qaleech Baig wrote on every subject of the world, including language, literature, history and poetry.
