KARACHI: A three-storey building collapsed because of the impact of work to construct another building near it in Liaquatabad on Tuesday, police and rescue services said.

Rescue workers rushed to the spot and removed the debris, but found no one dead or injured in the building collapse at Liaquatabad-10 near Bhora Khan Center, they said.

Rescue-1122 official Hassaan Khan told Dawn that it was a ramshackle building. He said digging was in progress for constructing a high-rise nearby. Ostensibly due to vibration arising out of the construction, it collapsed, he added.

The official said that the residents realising the gravity of the situation had already left the building.

Meanwhile, Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani ordered an inquiry into the building collapse incident. He directed the director general of the Sindh Building Control Authority and the deputy commissioner of Central district to submit a detailed report at the earliest.
