Promoting motorsports

YOUTHS represent more than two-thirds of Pakistani population, and they are eager to explore new interests and hobbies. In giving expression to this eagerness, they indulge in racing, one-wheeling and other such activities, which have gained popularity over the years, but all such activities currently take place illegally on busy roads. This poses a threat to their own lives as well as of bystanders. Such practices underscore the need for a safer alternative.

Promoting motorsports in the country is one way of making the ‘fun’ activity safe and fruitful. Contrary to the general perception, sporting events that involve motor vehicles are not limited to the very well-known Formula 1 (F1) races. They include various competitions, such as rallies, motocross, superbike racing

and much more. While people may have different views on the subject, they all may agree that Pakistan does not promote motorsports. And, turning an activity that is taking place illegally into a life-transforming professional pursuit can only do good to the individual and to the country.

Pakistani motorsports enthusiasts have a very limited space for following their interest. There is a need to have dedicated areas and facilities for these events, such as racing tracks for vehicles and trails for one-wheeling. This is just like having stadiums and courts for other sports.

The development of the proposed tracks would benefit both the participants and the organisers. In the long run, it will benefit the country as professionals would surely start making a name for themselves at the global level.

The tracks would also minimise the element of risk. They will right away ensure the safety of people on the roads. With aspiring racers getting proper tracks to hone their skills, the chance of accidents caused by over-speeding, racing or one-wheeling on the roads would naturally take a dip.

Car and jeep rallies are organised across Pakistan; from Cholistan to Malam Jabba, and from Hub to Bahawalpur. The accompanying picture also shows that even girls are interested in such events. The realm of motorsports definitely deserves investment and encouragement in Pakistan.
