HYDERABAD, March 15: District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil said on Wednesday the district had restored 23 sub-soil water wells in the city in order to protect peoples’ lifelong savings they had put in the construction of their houses.

Twenty-seven more wells would be made operational next month, he said while addressing the inauguration ceremony for a well in union council 2, Latifabad on Tuesday.

The nazim said underground water level in Qasimabad, Latifabad and other talukas of the city had reached an alarming level posing serious threat to peoples’ properties. It had also a bad impact on their market value, he added.

Sub-soil water wells were on top of the district’s priority list, followed in order of precedence by improvement in sewerage system, supply of clean water and construction of roads, he said.

Nazim said the district also wanted to restore the 49 wells, which were constructed in 1992 at a cost of Rs20 million, but work on them was abandoned two years later due to paucity of funds.The district had focussed on helping WASA increase recoveries.
