SHANGHAI: Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek dramatically ended his three months’ retirement today [Apr 27] by broadcasting a “stand fast” appeal to the Chinese people to fight on against “Communist tyranny”. He declared that “final victory will be ours within three years”. Immediately after the broadcast from his home province of Chekiang, the Generalissimo was reported to have flown to embattled Shanghai to confer with top Government officials on the defence of China’s richest prize, now almost isolated on the land side by powerful Communist armies.

There was no official confirmation that the Generalissimo was in this frontline city. But observers took his broadcast as an indication that he was resuming an active role of leadership after voluntarily stepping down from power on January 21, after 25 years as China’s “Strong Man.” — News agencies

[Meanwhile, according to reports in London,] the Dominion Prime Ministers advised King George this morning [April 27] that they may have reached complete agreement that India should remain a full and equal member of the Commonwealth of Nations after she becomes a Republic.
