LAHORE: A Punjab University’s Sociology Department clerk was shot and injured by a gunman on campus on Wednesday, allegedly for intervening to prevent the harassment of a female student.

Rana Anas saw an unidentified man pestering a female student after Iftar as he passed by his department. He asked the man to stop harassing the girl.

The perpetrator fled the scene initially, but Anas pursued and confronted him near an under-construction site on the campus. They both exchanged words, during which the assailant brandished a gun, shooting and injuring Anas before escaping.

Security guards, upon hearing the gunshot, shifted the injured clerk to the hospital, where he was reported to be in a stable condition.

Police registered a case and initiated an investigation.

A spokesperson for the university stated that efforts were underway to identify the suspect through the collection of CCTV footage.
