A 4.9 magnitude earthquake has been reported in Islamabad and its surrounding areas on Saturday night, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PMD said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 142 kilometres with its epicentre being the Hindu Kush region.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, the earthquake occurred at 10:44pm PST.

Dawn News reported that quakes were felt in Peshawar, Swat, Chitral, Lower Di and their surrounding areas.

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake jolted parts of the country last month. The tremors were caused by a powerful earthquake which hit northeastern Afgha­nistan, shaking buildings from the capital Kabul to Islamabad.

Lahore and its adjacent areas had experienced a strong earthquake at around 2:30pm but no reports of casualties or financial losses were received from across Punjab.

The epicentre of the earthquake was in the Hindu Kush region at a depth of 213km. Its longitude and latitude were 70.63 East and 36.16 North, respectively.
