GILGIT, Feb 28: An avalanche killed more than 600 cattle and destroyed 10,000 fruit trees and 11 houses in Miachar and Dadimal villages of tehsil Nagar, 75kms north of here, on Monday night.

People said that no human casualty was reported from any village as they had moved to safe places in anticipation of the avalanche, which is routine in the season. They said that the avalanche also destroyed hundreds of acres of agriculture land and suspended power supply to Dadimal, Miachar, Hamadass, Phakar and Hakuchar villages.

Northern Areas Legislative Council member from Nagar-II Mohammad Ali Akhtar and district councillor Habeebullah visited the affected villages to assess losses. They said that people of the two villages suffered heavy loss and demanded that the government should compensate them.
