KARACHI: Action on gas station sought

Published February 28, 2006

KARACHI, Feb 27: Sindh Ombudsman K. Yousuf Jamal has drawn the attention of City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal towards the proposed establishment of a CNG station in North Nazimabad.

In a letter addressed to the nazim, the ombudsman referred to his telephonic conversation with him on Feb 23 in which he pointed out towards an application he received from Dr Shaheen A. Hasan. The doctor, who resides in North Nazimabad, wrote the hazard the area people could face following the establishment of CNG station.

The ombudsman said that though the area in which the CNG station was proposed to be installed may had been commercialized but the installation of CNG station in a populated area was fraught with great risks.

Yousuf Jamal further stated that he could not understand as to how and under what circumstances the DCO had issued NoC for installation of the same.

The ombudsman referred to a big explosion in Defence some months back which served as a wakeup call for local bodies to beware of the ill considered setting up of CNG stations.

In fact, he said, no such NoC should be issued for a patently hazardous venture without keeping the concerns of security, public welfare and environmental pollution. The ombudsman while requesting the nazim to look into the matter expressed hope that he would direct for immediate remedial action. —APP
