PAINFUL REALITY

PAINFUL REALITY: The loadshedding of natural gas has become worse during winters. The inadequate supply affects industries, threatens economy, and leaves people without essential cooking and heating facilities. Gas loadshedding has become a painful reality of life. It is important to take prompt action to improve the gas distribution network and invest in other energy resources. Additionally, keeping the public informed about the reasons of severe loadshedding and communicating openly about the actions being implemented are essential requirements. The government should resolve the issue on a priority basis.

CREDENTIALS: I recently browsed through the data of those who contested 2018 general elections that is available on the website of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Additionally, while details of assets, spouses and children are available, there is scant information about the academic and professional credentials of the contestants. The upcoming parliament should take up the matter and make necessary amendments.

TARGETED KILLINGS: This is with reference to the report ‘Sunni Ulema Council leader gunned down’ (Jan 6). This is not the first time that a public figure or an activist has been publicly targeted. Such attacks have been alarming, and leave a big question mark hanging against the performance of those responsible to maintain law and order in society.

PUBLIC TOILETS: Public toilets, scarce as they are across Karachi, mostly remain locked. One wonders what is the point of having them if they cannot be kept functional. One such ‘facility’ along the University Road close to Mosamiyat can be taken as an example. It is hard to guess whether it is a public toilet meant for women, or a wall built for pasting advertisements.
