POWER STRUGGLE

POWER STRUGGLE: The Sukkur Electric Power Company (Sepco) is responsible for coverage, maintenance and regulation of electricity within the Sukkur region. Unfortunately, the villages, particularly in Gambat area, are in a miserable condition. There are no checks and balances, or proper loadshedding timings. These people pay the same unit charges as those living in the cities, but hardly get any value for the money they pay. I personally know poor families in and around Gambat who have been suffering for almost a year now on account of hefty bills and unreasonable taxes that they have been slapped with. The relevant authorities should come to their rescue and resolve the matter on an urgent basis.

PEOPLE’S BUS SERVICE: The People’s Bus Service (PBS) in Sindh is an excellent initiative for the people of Karachi. However, 30 new Green Buses, which were imported by the government in October, are still not on the roads. Moreover, the PNS Route R-6, approved in July 2022, has still not become functional. This route covers important industrial, commercial and residential areas of the city. The government should take notice of these problems urgently, and also extend Route R-3 till Nasir Jump, and Route R-11 from Clifton to Korangi No. 6 to facilitate thousands of people.

AIR POLLUTION: The air quality in Karachi has deteriorated over the last few months. Air pollution affects our physical health and the environment at large. People should try to reduce pollution as much as they can. They should take public transport or cycle to work instead of using personal vehicles. The relevant authorities should also improve the means of public transport, and invest in cleaner and modern machinery and equipment that produce less industrial waste. Moreover, it is important to organise awareness programmes and induce a sense of responsibility towards the city among its citizens.
