PESHAWAR, Feb 21: The Awami National Party (ANP) has called upon the government to declare Pushto as medium of instruction in schools in the Pukhtun-dominated areas of the province.
In a statement issued on Tuesday on the Mother Tongue Day, ANP’s provincial secretary-general Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that language played a significant role in the socio-economic and cultural development of any nation.
Referring to the UN resolution, he said that students should be taught in their mother tongues. He said that depriving a student of his right to be taught in his mother tongue violated the law concerning the basic human rights.
He urged people to communicate among themselves in their respective mother tongues which were identity of any nation and that was the reason that the UN had declared Fed 21 as the International Day of Mother Tongue.
LAW & ORDER: Meanwhile, NWFP ANP chief Bashir Ahmad Bilour expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the province and asked the government to take steps to protect the lives and properties of people.
He pointed out that Barrister Amin Khattak and his brother had been killed, but their killers were yet to be traced. He said the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal during its election campaign had promised to establish peace, but after coming to power they had forgotten their manifesto.
Mr Bilour also criticised the provincial government for its failure in protecting the public and private properties during the anti-blasphemy riots last week.
QADIR MAGSI: Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party leader Qadir Magsi met ANP leader Asfandyar Ali Khan here on Tuesday and condoled the death of Khan Abdul Wali Khan.
