UNENDING WORK

Published December 7, 2023

UNENDING WORK: I am a resident of the Defense Housing Authority (DHA). I wake up with scary nightmares of pain-inflicting commute in the mornings, and find them turning into reality every morning. The unending road development work initiated across the area has become a rather troublesome affair for the commuters. The commute that used to take minutes now takes hours, making the journey uncertain and uncomfortable. The authorities need to expedite the development work.

TEMPORARY RELIEF: Democracy is a good, effective system, but the Pakistani version of it has its limitations. For the last 15 years, Dadu has been neglected, with the budget meant for water supply, roads, education and municipal services getting regularly misappropriated by the very people who are supposed to deliver. Dadu seems to have been hit by some calamity owing to exploitation of the local ‘electables’ who are equal partners in the crime.

VECTOR-BORNE DISEASES: The people of Yarodero village in Qambar-Shahdadkot district have been gripped by vector-borne diseases, including malaria and dengue. In the absence of any effort by the local authorities, people have started resorting to odd tactics like lighting up fires to generate smoke in order to keep the mosquitoes at bay. The relevant authorities should take preventive measures immediately to stop the spread of vector-borne diseases.

FAILING SYSTEM: A young doctor recently died of Congo virus. He was serving at the Civil Hospital in Quetta where he was treating some patients infected with the deadly virus. The doctor, the only son and bread-earner in his family, lost his life due to the failing health system in the province. He was taken to Karachi by road, which took nearly 12 hours.
