ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting, and Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Solangi said that it was a collective responsibility to address the multifaceted challenge of tobacco consumption.

“As a minister and a concerned human being, I pledge to work tirelessly on this cause. Today, we celebrate the dedication of individuals who are striving for a tobacco-free Pakistan, emphasising the need for a radical shift in our lifestyle to stabilise our planet,” he said while speaking to participants of an event organised by the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (Sparc).

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, the event aimed at recognising champions of tobacco control across diverse sectors, drew participation from key government officials, health activists, and stakeholders.

The minister emphasised that there was a complex threat posed by tobacco consumption.

“Tobacco impacts not only the health of our citizens but also places a substantial burden on our healthcare system and economy. As we gather to acknowledge tobacco control champions, our shared responsibility is to foster a culture prioritising health, well-being, and the prosperity of our nation,” he said.

Dr Maheen Malik, Director of Tobacco Control for the South Asia Region at Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK), expressed gratitude for the commitment of partner organisation in Pakistan and pledged continued collaboration with stakeholders to ensure effective and responsive initiatives and policies addressing the evolving challenges posed by tobacco consumption.

Sparc Programme Manager Dr Khalil Ahmad Dogar emphasised the critical issue of tobacco use on the health and well-being of children, stating,

“Implementing these recommendations creates a safer and healthier environment for our youth, ensuring they grow up free from the devastating effects of tobacco,” he said.

The event celebrated individuals from government, academia, media, and youth who have dedicated themselves to the cause of creating a tobacco-free Pakistan. This collective effort reinforces the commitment to building a healthier and more resilient nation.
