RAWALPINDI: A cycling rally was held on Sunday with an aim to spread awareness about smog.

The cyclists started from Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) and travelled till Allama Iqbal Public Park in Shamsabad.

All officials of government offices, students and other segments of the society participated in the rally.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Hassan Waqar Cheema and assistant commissioners also participated in the rally.

The launch ride of the cycling rally was a representation of inclusivity and diversity as children, men, women and elderly people, along with the divisional administration, participated together.

Each participant had already registered, and the ride kicked off from Kutchery Chowk in front of FJWU. Riders thoroughly enjoyed the ride and experienced the city.

Addressing the riders gathering at Allama Iqbal Park in Shamsabad, Deputy Commissioner Dr Hassan Waqar Cheema appreciated the presence of riders from the twin cities.

He said the whole idea of launching the cycling rally with this unique ride was to engage the citizens of Rawalpindi in healthy activities and spread awareness of smog and pollution.

Dr Cheema said apart from the health benefits, the initiative would also discourage usage of cars or motorcycles for commuting purposes.

“Keeping the notion of sports for all in mind, we intend to make the physical and mental well-being of citizens the talk of the town by enhancing awareness and leading by example,” he said, adding that “we must set an example to transform Rawalpindi into a pollution-free city”.

In the end, certificates were distributed among the participants. The district administration sports department also distributed T-shirts and pamphlets among people to create awareness about the side effects of pollution and benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
