Kinnaird, KU in last eight

PESHAWAR, Feb 18: Kinnaird College and Karachi University advanced to the quarterfinals of the Inter-university women’s hockey championship at Jinnah College on Friday.

Kinnaird defeated hosts Peshawar University 4-2 in a thrilling battle.

Peshawar University grabbed lead through inside-right Saira Yousuf in the 9th minute off a field attempt.

Kinnaird made some combined moves after conceding a goal and in the 14th minute Sahrish Ahmed sounded the board with a perfect hit from the top of the circle to make it 1-1.

The two teams remained locked at 1-1 till half time.

Kinnaird scored two quick goals after resumption through outside-left Sana and fullback Mehwish to wrest back 3-1 lead. Peshawar University’s Rabia Zaman rushed to reduce the margin 3-2 converting a penalty corner.

But in the dying moments Kinnaird’s Naveen made it 4-2 and with it sealed the fate of the match.

In the other match Karachi University edged past Bahauddin Zakaria University 2-1 in a closely-fought encounter. Rabia Imran opened the account for Bahauddin but Karachi’s Maheen tied it 1-1 on a field attempt a minute later.

The teams exhausted all their efforts to clinch lead but failed in the stipulated time. In the extra-time Karachi’s Ambreen scored the golden goal to clinch the match 2-1.—APP
