KARACHI: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Tuesday handed over ownership documents of 200-square-yard industrial plots to allottees of the Orangi Town Cottage Industrial Zone.

Speaking at a ceremony held at the head office of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the mayor said that one of the main problems of the city was that institutions had been stopped from auctioning and allotting land.

“Shaheed Benazir Bhutto had given the Orangi Cottage Industrial Zone scheme to the city to bring about economic prosperity and employment at local level but successive governments did not allow this work to be completed,” he said, adding:

“Its time we talk about the stability of Karachi and work together for taking action against illegal activities,” he said, adding: “I invite all friends, let’s put political difference aside and work on the Charter of Karachi so that people can be confident that no one can occupy their land in the metropolis.”

The scheme was initiated in 1994 and it comprised of an area of 348 acres and the number of plots in the cottage industry was 3,946. The area of an industrial plot is 200 square yards. So far, 201 plots have been allocated in Sectors A, B, C and D of the industrial zone.
