“Amid the escalating conflict between Hamas and Israel, Malaysia and Indonesia have been among the countries most vocal in condemning Israel’s counteroffensive in Gaza and the toll it is taking on Palestinian civilians.

“By contrast, in neighbouring Thailand, Israel’s actions enjoy considerable support.

“It may seem surprising that a predominantly Buddhist nation that sees itself as a peaceful and harmonious country would back even Israeli military actions that appear to violate international humanitarian law. A key reason is that Thai migrant workers featured prominently among the victims of Hamas’ October 7 surprise attack on Israeli towns and farms near Gaza. According to the Thai government, 33 workers were killed, 18 injured and 22 were taken captive into Gaza.”
