Dr Ghassan Abu Sitta, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Gaza, has said that the number of children there who will need reconstructive surgeries as a result of the injuries caused by Israeli airstrikes is “unfathomable”.

In a video clip, former CNN correspondent Arwa Damon, who along with Dr Sitta is a founder of a charity organisation, shares a voice message sent by the surgeon.

In the message, Dr Sitta can be heard saying, “Once this nightmare is over, the number of kids that are going to need reconstructive surgery is unfathomable.

“Even if the war stops now, which has no chance of stopping, we need to really kind of go after a lot of money — you need to look at a million,” he added.

Damon said, “I know that when we are finally going to be able to get into Gaza, it is just going to eclipse anything I have witnessed the last 20 years covering war.”
