An investigation conducted by the New York Times has concluded that a widely circulated video — cited by Israel as evidence to make the case that a Hamas rocket malfunctioned and caused the deadly Al-Ahli Arab hospital strike — has no connection with the bombing of the medical facility.

The hospital strike, which killed nearly 500 Palestinians, was marked as the deadliest singular event in Gaza since Israel initiated an ongoing bombing campaign on the densely populated territory in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas.

Tel Aviv blamed the bombing on a failed Hamas rocket while the latter has said the strike was launched by Israel.

In a detailed analysis, The Times has deduced that the videos Israel has cited as evidence to support its claims — taken from an Al Jazeera television camera on the night of Oct 17 — showed that the missile in the clip “most likely not what caused the explosion at the hospital”.

“It actually detonated in the sky roughly two miles away,” The Times said.
