SUKKUR: A police constable was martyred and another was wounded when a gang of dacoits on motorcycles opened fire on a police patrol on the outskirts of Jacobabad on Sunday.

Police officials said that when the police patrol cautioned the motorcyclists to stop they started firing at the officials, martyring police constable Jamsher Chachar and injuring his colleague Noor Mohammad Chachar, before escaping.

They said that police gunned down one of the dacoits while his accomplices managed to escape.

They shifted the constable’s body to hospital and took the injured to Jacobabad airbase hospital where his condition was stated to be stable.

They transported the dacoit’s body to civil hospital where he was identified as Nizam-ud-Din Khoso, a resident of Allah Bachayo Khoso village, they said.

The outlaw’s body had been kept in the morgue as no one had turned up to receive it, said police.

Jacobabad SSP Syed Amir Abbas Shah and other police officials along with bereaved family and a large number of villagers attended funeral prayers for the martyr.

The SSP told media persons that police department would award Rs10million compensation and two government jobs to the bereaved family.

The government would also pay salaries of the martyred policeman to the heirs, he said.
