Repeal of Hudood law urged

Published February 9, 2006

LAHORE, Feb 8: The Commission for Peace and Human Development has stressed the need for repeal of the Hudood Ordinance instead of introducing amendments to it.

Reacting to the introduction of a bill against the Hudood Ordinance by the PPP Parliamentarians in the National Assembly, the Commission Executive Director Waseem Anthony said that the law required to be repealed as it had been grossly misused since its promulgation. He was of the view that any amendment to the law could not prevent its misuse. It was a good gesture on the part of the government to support the bill, he added.

He said the recommendations of the Federal Shariat Court, the Commission of Inquiry on Status of Women and National Commission on Status of Women for introducing changes or repeal of the ordinance clearly showed that it was being misused. The misuse of law was also evident from a marked increase in the registration of cases against women since its promulgation and acquittal of most of them after trial.
