BAJAUR: Unknown assailants shot dead a prayer leader in Khar tehsil of Bajaur tribal district here on Wednesday evening, the police and residents said.

They said that the incident occurred in Shinkoot area.

Talking to Dawn, they said that Maulana Tilla Mohammad, a prayer leader at a local mosque, was going to the mosque for offering evening prayers when unknown assailants started firing at him.

They said that the 45-year-old was critically injured in the attack and died while being shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, Khar.

The residents said that the attackers managed to flee from the area.

District police officer Nazeer Khan said that efforts were underway to arrest the fleeing assailants. He said that the police had launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the murder incident.
