KARACHI: The city administration on Tuesday increased the official price of milk from Rs180 to Rs200 per litre.

The milk retailers, however, have been selling fresh milk at the rate of Rs230 per litre, although the price of the commodity was officially fixed at Rs180 per litre in December last.

The retail and wholesale associations of the dairy product have rejected the new price of the milk, saying the quality of milk would be compromised if the prices were not revised upward.

Karachi Commissioner Muhammad Salim Rajput said that the officially fixed rate would be strictly implemented and stern action would be taken against profiteers.

He said that the wholesale price of milk was fixed at Rs188 per litre, while retail price was fixed at Rs200 per litre.

Besides the new milk price, the prices of beef and mutton were fixed at Rs635 per kg and Rs1,540 per kg, respectively. The price of heifer meat was fixed at Rs800 per kg.

The commissioner advised public not to pay for the essential commodities more than the official rates.

He said that the deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners in the city had been given strict instructions to effectively enforce the official prices of the commodities.

He said that the provincial food authority had been assigned to conduct raids at the retail milk shops to check the quality of the dairy products.
