Stampede at Pakpattan Urs kills man

PAKPATTAN, Feb 5: An elderly man was killed in a stampede at the Urs of Hazrat Baba Fareed Shakarganj late Saturday night. While several people were injured when police baton-charged them at Nagina Chowk and VIP gate at the shrine at the opening of the Bahishti Darwaza.

According to reports, Bashir Ahmad, 60, a resident of Baloki, was trampled in a stampede that followed the opening of the Bahishti Darwaza by Sajjada Nasheen Dewan Maudood Masood at 8:30pm.

Thousands of people passed through the gate on the first night. The door will remain open for five nights.

The shrine complex was traditionally decorated and devotees from the length and breadth of the country took part in various devotional activities. The Mehfil-i-Sama added glitter to the ceremony.
