GUJRANWALA, Feb 4: Seven Sambrial dry port officials, including an inspector, have been sacked for their involvement in an embezzlement of Rs150 million in rebate cases by the Customs authority.

Divisional Superintendent (Customs) Syed Khalid Javed said on Saturday some exporters received rebate of Rs150 million with the connivance of these officials without any export between 2001 and 2004. The Customs authorities got registered about 55 cases against the exporters and its officials and recovered Rs140 million from them.

Those fired were: inspector Abid Raza, Mujahid Saleem, Shahid Hassan, Muhammad Rashid, Ijaz Kharal, Muhammad Irfan and Muhammad Rafiq.

GEPCO: The Gujranwala Electric Power Company has constituted emergency squads to ensure uninterrupted power supply on the routes of Zuljinnah procession and at imambargahs during Muharram.

This was stated by company spokesman here on Saturday. He said the teams had been directed to maintain trolley transformers to restore the power supply in case of any fault. impounded: The district administration and police impounded more than 100 public transport vehicles in two days to transport people to Lahore to participate in Kashmir Day rally being led by Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi.

Commuters have to face inconvenience due to shortage of transport vehicles.

The regional transport authority (RTA) secretary and his staff and traffic police set up pickets on the GT Road at Rawalpindi bypass intersection, Sheikhupura Morr, Gondlanwala Chowk and general bus stand and impounded vehicles by evacuating passengers, including women and children.

The impounded vehicles have been parked at police station’s compounds and police lines’ ground.

Motorcycle rickshaw and other vehicles’ driver exploited the situation and charged whatever they wished.

When contacted, RTA secretary’s staff said he was busy in “an important meeting.”
