ISLAMABAD, Feb 1: The Pakistan People’s Party has opposed the appointment of army officers as judges and termed it as worse than establishment of military courts.

The party’s information secretary, Taj Haider, in a statement, here on Friday said the appointment of army officers as judges of ATC courts would lead to unprecedented corruption in the judiciary.

The PPP rather demands free and fair elections under a government of national consensus and the return of the armed forces to the barracks, he added.

He said the situation of serving army officers sitting on the bench was far worse than the establishment of military courts, which had been struck down by the Supreme Court as an attempt to establish parallel judiciary.

He said this position could be reversed only if the free will of the people was allowed to prevail.—Our Reporter
