Officials asked to combat crime

SUKKUR, Jan 31: District Nazim Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has exhorted police officers, taluka nazims and taluka municipal officers for playing their role in combating terrorism and sectarianism.

He held a meeting with the police officers and taluka nazims following instructions by the prime minister secretariat, according to an official press statement issued on Tuesday.

Mr Shah directed the officers to prepare updated information of all activists operating in the area so that appropriate action could be taken against them.

He also directed them to keep constant check on use of loudspeakers in mosques.

The officers were also asked to prevent publication and distribution of literature which provoked feelings of hatred among various sectarian groups.

PROTEST: Around 1,000 activists of the Pakistan People’s Party on Monday took out a procession and staged a sit-in for two hours in front of the press club in Ghotki against negative attitude of the government with political leaders, especially Benazir Bhutto.

The protesters included MPA Jam Saifullah Dharejo, MPA Asar Das, former MNA Mian Mithoo and others.

They raised slogans against President Musharraf and the Sindh chief minister.

WOMAN KILLED: A woman was strangulated to death by her husband on Monday over a domestic dispute in Siddiq Mari Muhalla of Shikarpur in the precinct of Stuart Ganj police station.

According to reports, Jawed Ahmed Kumbhar had quarrelled with his wife Hafeezan and strangulated her to death and fled.

Mohammad Ismail, uncle of the deceased, registered a case with the Stuart Ganj police against Jawed Ahmed and his brother Ashiq.
