KARACHI: A raiding police team was attacked and two of its members were held hostage by suspected criminals in Ibrahim Hyderi on Monday.

Sukkan DSP Wasif Qureshi told Dawn that the police team acting on a tip-off raided a place in Syed Para, seized 100kg of ‘gutka and mawa’ and detained some suspects.

He said their accomplices reached the scene and attacked the police, held two policemen ‘hostage’ and gave them a severe beating.

He said a heavy contingent of the police rushed to the scene and managed to ‘rescue’ the policemen.

The DSP said four suspects, including one in injured condition, were taken into custody.

However, residents told the media that police shot a man during the raid upon which the residents staged protest, beat up two policemen, held them hostage and made a video that went viral on social media later.
