ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday appointed Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman, as the Chief Justice of the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) for three years.

The president approved the appointment in line with Article 175(A)(13) of the Constitution, a press release by the President House said.

Justice Rehman is a former judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. On May 16, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) recommended his name for the slot.

The JCP meeting, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial, unanimously approved the recommendation.

According to media reports, Mr Rehman had been a judge of the Supreme Court from 2013 to 2016, but resigned from the post after he was accused of making illegal appointments in the Islamabad High Court during his tenure as the court’s top judge.

He was made the first chief justice of the IHC on Jan 3, 2011.
