ISLAMABAD, Jan 19: The All Pakistan Alliance of Katchi Abadis has criticized mass eviction of people in Karachi due to the Lyari Expressway Project. In a statement here, the alliance chairman, Asim Sajjad, said the city district government’s recourse to eviction reflected its disregard for the international commitments that Pakistan had made to protect basic freedoms including the right to shelter.

He said since January 5, hundreds of homes had been demolished in Gulshan-i-Iqbal and along Sir Shah Mohammad Suleman Road, and the process was continuing.

He said the city government had assured the residents that they would not be evicted from the area, however it ratted on its promise creating a confrontation with the residents.

Mr Sajjad said during evictions over the past weeks, numerous residents were shot at. He said most of the affected people had been rendered shelterless.
