PESHAWAR: Former principal of the then Khyber Medical College Prof Sirajuddin Ahmed died in Chicago, USA, on Friday. He will be laid to rest in Peshawar Cantonment here on Thursday (today).

The noted physician will be laid to rest after a funeral ceremony to be held at 2pm at the Cantonment graveyard on the Warsak Road. Before the funeral prayers, people will assemble at his 53 The Mall, Peshawar Cantonment residence at 1.30pm to offer condolences.

Prof Sirajuddin had had also worked in Lady Reading Hospital and Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar, for three decades. He was accredited for his innovative approaches towards academic excellence and treatment of patients when he was principal of Khyber Medical College.

Prof Siraj, brother of reputed lawyer Barrister Mohammad Zahurul Haq, was also part of a three-member panel that diagnosed the first-ever HIV/Aids patient in Pakistan. He took part in research on HIV/Aids and scaled up public awareness regarding public health issues through seminars and workshops. He left behind three sons and a daughter to mourn his death.

After retirement, Prof Siraj wrote articles in Dawn and other newspapers on health and other matters.
