CASTING VOTES

Published March 5, 2023

CASTING VOTES: This is with refe- rence to the editorial ‘Sindh LG polls’ (Jan 17) which mentioned that a political party had swept most local body seats in Hyderabad while securing 94 in Karachi. We would see more surprises in the next elections if 85 per cent voters of Karachi decide not to exercise their right to vote. Boycotting elections serves no purpose.

CRUEL TRADITION: Dowry is an utterly disgusting tradition. A survey revealed that nearly 56 per cent of Pakistanis want the bride-to-be to bring in some windfall. The pressure to meet such expectations has taken a toll on society. Many cases of marital conflicts and domestic violence are linked to dowry, resulting in divorce or depression. Implementation of laws against dowry should be ensured.

CERVICAL CANCER: According to a report by the Global Cancer Observatory (Globocan), 5,000 new cases of cervical cancer and 3,000 deaths are reported in Pakistan every year. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer in women worldwide, and more than 95 per cent of it is caused by sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV). The disease can be prevented through HPV vaccination. The primary target of vaccination is girls aged 9-14 years, while vaccination for boys and older females is recommended where feasible. We need to raise awareness in this regard.

BALANCED NUTRITION: Malnutrition has multiple causes, and is particularly prevalent in Pakistan where children suffer from a lack of nutritional foods. Malnutrition leads to many afflic- tions, such as stunted growth. On the other hand, over-nutrition also leads to childhood obesity which increases the risk of having childhood diabetes. We need to hold awareness sessions to educate parents about healthy nutrition.
