TAX FILERS

TAX FILERS: There are just over three million people who file their annual income tax (IT) returns without any excuse or delay. It is a pity that the Federal Board of Revenue sends notices to these very taxpayers when it should be spending its energies on increasing the number of filers. The burden must be shared by all regardless of the mode of their incomes.

SOUTH PUNJAB: This is with reference to the letter ‘South Punjab is a victim of neglect’ (Jan 5) which committed a geographical oversight by including the districts of Jhang and Bhakkar in the proposed South Punjab province. The two districts have always been an integral part of Sargodha division in Central Punjab, and have never been considered a part of the Seraiki belt. It amounts to nothing more than a self-perceived interpretation.

COLOUR CONTROVERSY: A recent song in a Bollywood movie featuring an actress in a saffron-coloured piece of clothing sparked outrage among Hindu right-wing groups, once again exposing the social mindlessness prevailing in India. Colours are neutral; you make different shades of colours by combining them to depict your feelings. There is nothing wrong in or with the colours. Sentiments exist merely in the mind that contemplates the meaning. Petty minds see things parochially and sane minds seek beauty in everything.

POLIO DRIVE: The government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recently launched the first polio drive of the year to vaccinate 7.2 million children. At least 20 cases of polio were registered last year in KP. With an increase in militancy, the drive for immunisation is at risk. During the 16 drives held last year, 42,000 security officials were deployed, but there were still 14 attacks on polio teams. The government should provide proper security to polio workers.
