LAHORE, Jan 8: British Transport and General Workers Union secretary-general Tony Woodly says workers are being deprived of their fundamental rights due to globalization and privatization. Talking to Pakistan Labour Federation chairperson Attiya Saleem and secretary-general Haji Mohammad Saeed on Sunday, he said the employers were denying the rights of workers and even dismissing them from service on the pretext of preparing their organizations for facing the challenge of globalization. Thousands of workers had lost their jobs as a result of the privatization of public sector units.
He said the World Bank, IMF and other international financial institutions were also increasing unemployment by advancing loans on the condition of downsizing and rightsizing. He said the workers of different countries would have to unite and struggle for the protection of their rights.—Reporter
