KARACHI: Rejecting the demand of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for holding mayoral elections before local government poll, the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) on Monday asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to decide the cases of multiple election complaints and announce schedule for polling in the 11 union committees where the process was deferred due to the deaths of candidates.

At a press conference, city JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman demanded that the ECP immediately decide what he termed the open-and-shut cases on merit.

He also warned those “in the corridors of powers” not to compel the JI and Karachiites to hold another sit-in outside the ECP.

He asked the ECP to complete the electoral process for the LG set up in Karachi in the next 30 days. In this regard, he requested the ECP to announce schedule for the polls on the 11 UCs.
