KARACHI: Four Pakistani prisoners were killed and several others injured when the Indian sentries opened fire on them in a POW camp in Uttar Pradesh. … An All-India Radio report quoted by Radio Pakistan alleged that the Pakistanis were trying to break out of the camp.

The … report monitored here said: “Some Pakistani POWs, lodged in a camp in UP, attempted to escape yesterday evening. At first, two of them crossed the outer perimeter. As they ignored repeated warnings, the sentries were forced to open fire. Immediately, about 100 more POWs rushed towards the gate, charged on the fence and broke it open. These prisoners were asked on loudspeakers to go back. But the warning had no effect. As a result sentries had to open fire again to control the situation.”—News agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by our Staff Reporter from Karachi,] every third auto-rickshaw in the City has a rigged meter and the passenger has to pay the inflated fare through his nose. According to a survey, about 30 per cent of the 10,000 auto-rickshaws are plying with immunity — notwithstanding a fare raise allowed by the Government.
