UNFAIR DEDUCTION

UNFAIR DEDUCTION: This refers to the report ‘Ministry to give Rs100m to FDE for running school buses’ (Nov 7), according to which, in order to ensure a smooth operation of the bus service, some amount will be arranged from “various heads of the education ministry”. Most of the time, these funds are gathered by cutting the allocated heads related to the teachers. This has created a huge backlog of payments already, and teachers have been facing an awkward situation in these times of high inflation. One hopes the targeted funds would not affect the teachers in any way.

PASSING THE BUCK: The rains did have a disastrous effect on life across Sindh, but it alone cannot be blamed for the entire mess. The lack of proper drainage system made it as much a man-made disaster as it was a natural calamity. Built in the 1980s, the drainage system was never revamped or cleaned. Millions of rupees have been used for repairs and maintenance, but there is hardly anything to show for it. The authorities concerned should accept the blame and do something for the affected.

FORGETFUL NATION: Recently, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) issued a banknote of Rs75 denomination to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence, featuring images of national heroes. Ironically, many people are unfamiliar with the image of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and his services. We truly need to understand the importance of history and the services of our heroes. Countries that forget their history cannot have a future.

CUTTING THE ROOTS: The recent attack by dacoits against Sindh police is an appalling incident. In the recent past, incidents of kidnapping for ransom have been rising alarmingly. The security forces need to identify the accomplices before carrying out operations against the dacoits. Cutting the root of the menace will lead to a positive change.
