BOGOTA, Jan 29: An Ecuadoran jet missing for more than 24 hours with 92 people on board was found on Tuesday at the base of Cumbal volcano in southern Colombia, with no signs of survivors, military and civilian authorities said.

An official confirmed the plane’s wreckage had been found at the foot of the volcano, at some 4,700 metres, by a rescue patrol some 20 kilometres from the border with Ecuador.

Wreckage apparently belonging to the missing Boeing 727 was found by teams of military rescuers in the mountainous area straddling the Ecuadoran-Colombian border, Ecuador’s cabinet chief said earlier.

The Boeing 727-100 with Ecuador’s state-run TAME airlines had left Quito on Monday at 1503 GMT for Tulcan, Ecuador, near the Colombian border.

The search has focused on the Ecuadoran-Colombian border, and a committee of inquiry was examining every possibility, including hijacking, authorities said earlier.—AFP
