KARACHI: The urban immovable property tax management department was on Wednesday formally transferred from the excise and taxation department to the local government department with the approval of the provincial cabinet, enabling local councils to collect urban property tax.

Speaking at a programme held in this regard, Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said the transfer of urban property tax collection to the local councils would significantly increase their resources.

LG secretary Najam Shah said that currently the number of taxable units in Karachi was approximately 840,000.
