KARACHI: Total 15,000 cleft lip and palate surgeries are required in Pakistan every year because approximately 10,000 children are born with these issues. Some have both problems at the same time.

This was stated by Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Saeed Quraishy while addressing the launching of the first book on the issues titled Surgical Atlas of Cleft Palate and Palatal Fistula held at Arag Auditorium of Dow Medical College.

The amount of work done on palatal fistula surgery in Pakistan had not been done anywhere in the world. That was why the first book on that surgery had been published by a Pakistani surgeon, he said.

“Our pride in this is that the author, Dr Ghulam Qadir Fayyaz, is a Dow-trained surgeon,” he said.

Prof Quraishy said Dr Fayyaz chose a very difficult subject; it was not an easy task which he did through that book. The role of Dr Fayyaz was very important in the field of plastic surgery, he said.
