NO VICE-CHANCELLOR

NO VICE-CHANCELLOR: A bus moving without a driver is doomed. Right? A university without a vice-chancellor (VC) has pretty much the same fate. In one case, lives are lost. In the other case, lives are destroyed. The University of Sargodha is functioning without a permanent VC for almost a year now. Lives are getting destroyed because nobody is able to ensure that academic activities are moving in a timely manner. They are not. The relevant authorities should look into the matter and appoint a permanent VC immediately.

NET INFLOW: It is nice to hear our leaders every now and then talking about the need to ‘learn to live within our means’, but at the same time they celebrate loans, commitments, pledges and donations from just about anywhere and everywhere. There is also the element of dollars flying out of the country under one head or the other. It is the net inflow of external finances that affects the currency exchange rate. Let’s hope we will be able to strike the balance in the future.

WATER SUPPLY: After the recent rains, Hub dam and Kalri Lake are said to have enough water in the reservoirs that may ensure smooth supply for many years. However, water shortage in Block 1 of Federal B-Area in Karimabad has remained as bad as it has been for God knows how long. The residents of the area have to purchase water at exorbitant prices. There is excess of water causing misery to people, and, at the same time, there is shortage of water causing misery to many others. Does this all make sense?

VICTIMS AND AID: What we seem to have learnt from the recent devastation caused by the floods is to strive for more funds while shunning our own responsibility. Donors should make sure, to the extent they can, that aid, in any form, does reach the victims directly rather than passing through area influentials.
