ISLAMABAD: The number of Covid-19 cases has decreased in the capital compared to the last two weeks, however, six persons were infected with dengue virus in a single day.

During the first week of August, 477 people were infected with the virus whereas in the second week, 420 people tested positive. As maany as 402 people were diagnosed with the disease last week. The weekly positivity was recorded at 4.7pc compared to 5.6pc a week earlier.

According to a document available with Dawn, 8,533 Covid-19 tests were conducted during the last one week and 7,466 tests were carried out, the week before that.

The data regarding dengue virus shows that 44 people have been infected while one person succumbed to the disease since the beginning of this year. Out of 44 cases, 32 were reported from rural areas and 12 from the urban areas.

However, during the last 24 hours, six people were infected and all of them belonged to the rural areas.

A total of 121 fogging activities have been done in the federal capital since April this year. While usually a single case was being reported in a week since April 30, the pace of cases has suddenly increased during the current month.

District Health Officer Dr Zaeem Zia, while talking to Dawn, said that currently the department was busy in dealing with dengue, Covid-19, vaccination and diarrhoea.

“The cases of dengue have suddenly started increasing so we have been giving awareness to masses that they should take precautionary steps to reduce chances of dengue,” he said.

Dr Zaeem said at the same time vaccination against Covid-19 was also in full swing and teams were being sent in educational institutions and offices to administer doses and booster shots to people.
