OUR national flag reflects the sovereignty of the state. We recently celebrated Pakistan’s diamond jubilee on Aug 14 for which households and streets were decorated with flags as a show of our love for the country.

Unfortunately, like previous years, this year, too, one could see hundreds of flags used during the celebrations ending up in garbage dumps.

While we apparently show our patriotism during the celebrations, we always disrespect our national flag by throwing it as a mere piece of paper or cloth.

One must remember that the flag is our identity, and martyred soldiers are draped in the Pakistani flag, which is considered an honour not all achieve. This is reserved only for those who sacrifice their lives for the country.

Honouring our national flag should be the first priority of all of us. I urge all and sundry to store all flags used for celebra-tions on a similar occasion next year.
